Background

Grant Thornton is a worldwide network of independent accounting and consulting firms that offer audit, tax, and advisory services to a diverse range of clients.

The Digital Foundry team was brought in to update Grant Thornton’s internal auditing software to better support its global auditing teams.

Goals

  • Simplify the software so users can navigate each step of the audit process easily

  • Clearly organize and visualize complex audit information

  • Enable effective collaboration among auditing teams during engagements

Approach

We worked closely with stakeholders and subject matter experts—many of whom were practicing auditors—to understand the current audit workflow, pain points, and requirements for a more effective tool. Using these insights, we refined designs that simplified complex tasks and aligned with auditors’ mental models and terminology.

We worked with developers to address technical constraints and ensure the designs were feasible. We also conducted multiple rounds of user testing with audit teams, which guided key improvements.

Conclusion

Although the project was ongoing when I transitioned off, the team contributed significantly to shaping the product direction through research, iterative design, and close collaboration with stakeholders. Feedback throughout the engagement was consistently positive, and the work remained well aligned with the needs of Grant Thornton’s global auditing teams.
